My essay this morning, “An Antisemitic Troll Tanked My GoodReads Rating,” made a difference.
The good news: GoodReads just removed the 1-star review of my upcoming novel Blank (coming out March 1) that was based solely on antisemitism! This is a major victory won thanks to all of YOU. You reported the troll. You added positive reviews. You changed the average. Thank you. I’ll be keeping my eye on the account to see if this happens again, but in the meantime, hooray!
The bad news: Someone out there didn’t like what I had to say and decided to enact cyber revenge on me. This afternoon and evening, I received hundreds and hundreds of emails from different sites, communities, newsletters, and mailing lists in all different languages and from some very inappropriate venues welcoming me. Someone (or some bot) posed as me for several hours and signed me up for everything just to bother me. I will now have to shut down my email account, which is a huge issue for so many reasons. This feels incredibly invasive and upsetting. I hope this is the end of it. (Knock wood.)
Be careful out there.
But thank you.
I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. It's unfair and exhausting and such a colossal waste of your time and energy.
Great news! More people (of all faiths) need to keep speaking out against antisemitic acts and all hate. Thank you for doing this.
